Phil’s Balloons Hits 1 Million

After the excitement of me flying my 100th hour on the Saturday; Sunday was due to be a little more exciting.

For those that don’t know the history of the Phil’s Balloons website, here is a quick story.

Back in 1997 when I was just 11 years old the website started as a school project. Once the project was complete, I decided to carry on updating the website, just simply adding photos of balloons that I had taken as they flew over my house.
One day I got an email from a local balloon pilot in Bristol that had seen my website, and saw a photo of his balloon. He then invited me to be part of the team one afternoon to help then with their balloon and see how it all works. I went on many outings with them, and my work experience at school when I was 14 was actually spending a week in France as part of a balloon team! I had my first flight out there also. I did a further week’s work experience in Cameron Balloons helping building some of the balloons that are still around today!

The website has certainly changed over the years, and some things have come and gone – like a forum. Once very popular, Facebook soon took away from the regular postings so a decision was made to remove it from the site. We now do live tracking via satellites and available for us to do it in any country that we fly in.
Photos of pretty much every flight are always being added, with thousands and thousands on the site – I don’t actually know of the number of photos on here, but it would be interesting to find out!

We also are doing videos of almost every flight – I say almost every flight, this is mainly due to the fact that sometimes I forget to charge the camera up! To my knowledge I was the first balloon pilot to start using the GoPro cameras (certainly the first to start publishing them online anyway), and now have a whole array of cameras, mounts, accessories and many other technical gadgets!

I quite often check the website stats to see how it is doing, and noticed that it was coming up to a very special number indeed! Over a single year period (from May 2012 to May 2013), the website actually got up to OVER 1 Million hits!! This is a first for the website, and the hits still keep coming. It gives me such a great feeling to know that so many people are visiting the site from all over the world. I must be doing something right that’s for sure! I’m always open to hearing ideas about the website, so if you think of something you want to see on there, or you see something that’s not right, then get in touch!

A massive personal thank you to each and every one of you that visits the website. Seeing the stats, getting the emails, and seeing the likes on Facebook etc all make it worthwhile indeed. Here’s to the next million!!
